ORLANDO, Fla. — The Orlando Magic announced a major organizational change as executive Alex Martins transitions to a new role as vice chair, effective immediately. Martins, who has been a significant figure within the franchise for over three decades, steps away from his day-to-day responsibilities and will now advise the team’s board of directors.

In this new position, Martins will work closely with the DeVos family, including chairman Dan DeVos, and continue to influence the organization’s direction. He has been instrumental in various initiatives throughout his tenure, including securing funding for the construction of the Kia Center (formerly known as Amway Center), and enhancing the team’s presence in the Orlando community.

“We thank Alex for his exemplary service to the Magic organization as CEO,” said Dan DeVos in a press release. “His commitment to excellence has distinguished him as an extraordinary leader in our organization and the Orlando community.”

Martins first joined the Magic in 1989 as a public relations manager and climbed the ranks to become the team’s CEO in 2012. His leadership coincided with both the team’s highs and lows, navigating through notable challenges, including the trade of franchise player Dwight Howard.

Following Martins’ transition, Ryan DeVos has been promoted to a larger role as managing director, while Charlie Freeman will continue to oversee the team’s business operations. President of basketball operations Jeff Weltman will report directly to the board, marking a shift in the organization’s structure aimed at furthering the team’s competitive goals.

Martins expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve in a new capacity, saying, “It has been an honor leading the Magic alongside the DeVos family, and I welcome the opportunity to continue working closely together in this new role.”

This restructuring mirrors successful organizational frameworks from the past and positions the Magic for future growth as they seek to build on their recent development and progress.
