Bubba Cunningham Transitions to Advisory Role in UNC Athletics

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Bubba Cunningham is stepping into an advisory role as the athletic director of the University of North Carolina after the upcoming season. He will continue in his current position until the summer of 2026, when he will become senior advisor to the chancellor and athletic director.
Cunningham stated, “As part of my last contract extension, I committed to working with University leadership on a succession plan that would positively position Carolina Athletics and our 28 teams for the future. I appreciate the opportunity to extend my contract and enhance my role in a way that will allow me to continue to support our outstanding student-athletes, coaches and staff as we transition and navigate the changing athletics landscape. I am excited for the future.”
Since taking on the role in 2011, Cunningham has brought UNC 24 national titles. He played a key role in hiring controversial coach Bill Belichick, who was not initially Cunningham’s “preferred target.” Belichick, who has been criticized for recent performance, is under contract until 2029, though his buyout is set at $1 million.
As Cunningham prepares for his role change, Steve Newmark is taking over as executive associate athletic director. Newmark previously served as the president of RFK Racing and will initially focus on revenue generation related to UNC’s football and basketball programs. He is expected to transition to the Director of Athletics role in summer 2026.
Earlier this year, Cunningham faced scrutiny regarding the selection of UNC’s men’s basketball team for the NCAA Tournament. He was the chairman of the committee that made the selection, leading to allegations of potential collusion from one of the teams overlooked for a spot, West Virginia.
