Gael Monfils Atp Chengdu Open

CHENGDU, China — French tennis player Gael Monfils will seek to end his title drought at the 2025 ATP Chengdu Open. The 39-year-old, who has not won a title since January, is set to face Kazakhstan’s Alexander Shevchenko in the Round of 32 on Thursday.

This match marks the first career encounter between Monfils, a former World No. 6, and the 24-year-old Shevchenko, currently ranked No. 96. The winner will advance to the pre-quarterfinals, where they will compete against either Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard or Filip Misolic.

Despite his entertaining on-court style, Monfils faces challenges in this late stage of his career, holding an 18-14 win-loss record this year. His best results include reaching the Round of 16 at both the Australian Open and the Miami Open. “Every match is a bonus, and I hope to find my rhythm again,” Monfils said.

Shevchenko, having recently struggled with a 0-3 start to his current season, found some form by reaching the pre-quarterfinals at the Rio Open. His only quarterfinal showing this season was at the Generali Open in Kitzbühel. Shevchenko’s performance has shown potential, especially in his recent Davis Cup match where he won decisively.

Both players have strengths that could sway the match in their favor. Monfils’ extensive experience may offer him an edge, particularly on hard courts, where he has performed well historically. Meanwhile, Shevchenko’s determination and ability to fight until the last point are notable.

Betting markets give Monfils a 60% chance of winning this match. The odds reflect his experience and past success on hard surfaces, which are considered neutral for both players. “If I can maintain my serve and stay active in rallies, I am confident about my chances,” Monfils added.

The match is scheduled to start at 4:30 AM Eastern Time on Thursday. Tennis fans eagerly await this showdown as both players vie to advance further in the tournament.
