Yankees’ Volpe Aims for Defensive Redemption in Upcoming Playoffs

NEW YORK, NY — New York Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe is looking to improve his defense as the postseason approaches. Despite a stellar 2022 season, this year has been a struggle in the field for Volpe, who led the American League with 19 errors, with 13 of those coming while throwing.
Volpe’s defensive prowess was a key part of his game during his first two seasons, where he earned praise for his footwork, instincts, and approach to the ball. However, this year, he has demonstrated inconsistency, particularly after suffering a partially torn labrum in his left shoulder. The injury occurred on May 3 while diving for a ball, affecting his performance for several months.
“Only three of his 19 errors came before he hurt his shoulder,” a source familiar with the situation said. Volpe did not commit any errors in the 12 games following his return from a cortisone shot late in the season. Although the injury was not on his throwing arm, it still impacted his ability to throw accurately, as shortstops often rely on their non-throwing shoulder for stabilization.
Volpe’s defensive metrics, which evaluate factors like sprint speed and arm strength, show a marked decline in 2025. He finished the season with a -6 Outs Above Average (OAA) compared to positive figures in previous years, indicating the struggles he faced this season.
“It’s important for him to regain that rhythm. He needs to attack the ball confidently,” said a sports analyst. This hesitancy led to an increase in errors, especially when it came to his normally strong footwork and quick release. Volpe’s mechanics faltered as he engaged with grounders, impacting his ability to make accurate throws.
As the Yankees prepare for tonight’s game at 6:08 p.m. ET, Volpe will be under scrutiny, as his defensive performance will be crucial for the team’s success and hopes of advancing in the playoffs. The performance of a shortstop can be the difference between winning and losing in critical moments.
With postseason stakes high, Volpe’s recent improvements in pace and footwork provide a glimmer of hope for Yankees fans. “If he can maintain a strong defensive presence, it could greatly enhance their chances of reaching the World Series again,” the analyst added.
