Sal Frelick Joins Best Buddies Wisconsin, Boosts Community Spirit

MILWAUKEE, WI – Brewers outfielder Sal Frelick is making headlines off the field by getting involved with Best Buddies Wisconsin, a program that pairs students with special needs with peers.
At a recent game against the Los Angeles Angels on September 16, a crowd of 30,000 saw Frelick supported by new fans from Best Buddies. Frelick, who has been actively attending events, has formed friendships with members like Mitch Welk. “I actually got to meet him in person. My mom and dad took a picture of me and Sal and we got a bro hug,” Welk said.
The enthusiasm of local Best Buddies directors, Laura Brackett and Caroline Tyson, grew when Frelick reached out through Instagram expressing his desire to get involved. “We opened our Instagram and there was a message from someone named Sal who said, ‘I love Best Buddies, I’d love to get involved,’” Tyson explained.
Frelick is familiar with the program, having participated during his high school years in Massachusetts. He fondly recalls events like prom where students would walk down a red carpet together. “I really do think they’re angels. I can’t even imagine what high school would have been like without that program,” Frelick remarked, highlighting the positivity he experienced.
Now playing for the Brewers, Frelick is excited about his role in the Milwaukee community, particularly with Best Buddies. “When I was out here, it felt like something was missing. I found my home with this crew,” he said.
Tyson noted Frelick’s impact, stating, “He has a huge heart and compassion for the community we serve. It’s clear when you watch him interact with the kids and adults.” More than 1,000 people attended a recent Friendship Walk that Frelick helped promote.
The core mission of Best Buddies is providing community and understanding for those with different life experiences. Frelick encourages others to engage with people with special needs, saying, “If you’re around people with special needs, go up and talk to them. That’s how I got involved.”
Frelick’s dedication to community service has also led to his nomination for the prestigious Roberto Clemente Award, which honors Major League Baseball players for their philanthropic efforts. The award winner will be announced during the World Series.
