KPop Demon Hunters Sequel Planned for 2029 Release
LOS ANGELES, CA — Sony Pictures Animation has confirmed a sequel to the animated musical hit “KPop Demon Hunters,” aiming for a 2029 release. Despite the excitement, fans may face a lengthy wait as the production of animated films often takes several years.
The original film, which tells the story of a fictional K-pop girl group battling demons, premiered on Netflix earlier this year and quickly became a cultural phenomenon. It is now the streaming service’s most popular movie of all time, boasting over 325 million views.
Three original songs from the film — “Golden,” “Your Idol,” and “Soda Pop” — have contributed to its success, consistently appearing on the Billboard Hot 100 and could earn Grammy nominations. The film’s soundtrack reached Number One on the Billboard 200 Albums chart, overshadowed only by Taylor Swift‘s album.
Co-directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans have long expressed a desire for a sequel. Kang noted, “We’ve set up so much for potential backstory. Obviously, there’s a lot of questions that are left unanswered and areas that are not explored.”
During its theatrical release this past summer, a sing-along version of “KPop Demon Hunters” collected approximately $18 million over two days, demonstrating the film’s strong following, even after being available for streaming.
Netflix and Sony did not comment on further details regarding the production timeline or developments regarding the sequel.
