NEW YORK — Claressa Shields, a leading figure in women’s boxing, recently secured a two-year promotional deal worth $8 million, marking a significant step in her professional career. The 30-year-old athlete, who maintains an undefeated record in 17 fights and has held titles in five weight classes, aims to retire by age 38.

Shields announced her plans during a Thursday event at an upscale Asian fusion restaurant near Times Square. She outlined her desire to fight two to three times in 2026, followed by a year off to start a family. She anticipates earning over $15 million next year through fight-related income, including ticket sales and merchandise.

“I feel like I’m finally getting my just due,” Shields told attendees, expressing satisfaction with the terms of her new agreement with Salita Promotions and Wynn Records. This deal not only guarantees four bouts but also provides the flexibility to explore crossover fights with other promoters.

Having made headlines during her career — including being the first American boxer to win two Olympic gold medals — Shields tested free agency after her last title defense in July. She faced intense negotiations with major companies like Matchroom Sport and Most Valuable Promotions before returning to Salita Promotions, citing better guaranteed money and established trust.

Shields’s new deal includes an upfront signing bonus of $3 million, which she views as crucial. Other companies offered only up to $2 million. “It seems like my goals are too big, right?” she remarked, highlighting gender disparities in boxing pay.

Shields aims to follow in the footsteps of boxing icons like Floyd Mayweather Jr., stating, “I’m trying to get to where I can make $50 million for one fight.” However, she acknowledged the challenge of finding top-tier opponents.

The promoter, Dmitriy Salita, commented on Shields’s confidence and ambitions, asserting that her legacy in women’s sports is undeniable. Though Shields has expressed interest in fighting well-known opponents, including Laila Ali, those negotiations could prove complex.

Following the event, Shields indicated her intention to fight in early 2026 while steering clear of mixed martial arts, encouraged by her partner. “I said that I wouldn’t do it because he cannot handle it,” she explained regarding her decision to focus solely on boxing.

Ultimately, Shields hopes to enhance women’s boxing during her remaining years in the sport, setting timelines that could lead to major matchups and further growth in her career.
