Aitana Bonmatí Wins Second Consecutive Ballon d’Or Féminin
Spanish midfielder Aitana Bonmatí has made history by winning the Ballon d'Or Féminin for the second consecutive year. The 26-year-old Barcelona player was honored at the awards ceremony held on October 28, 2024, for her outstanding performance in the past season.
Bonmatí played a pivotal role in Barcelona’s unprecedented quadruple win last season, securing the fifth Liga F, third Women’s Champions League, sixth Copa de la Reina, and fourth Spanish Supercopa of her career. Her contributions extended beyond club success, as she was also part of the Spanish national team that won the first edition of the Women's Nations League, scoring in the 2-0 victory over France in the final.
This marks the fourth successive year a Barcelona player has won the Ballon d’Or Féminin, following Alexia Putellas‘s wins in 2021 and 2022. Bonmatí’s teammate Caroline Graham Hansen finished second in the voting, ahead of other top nominees including Salma Paralluelo and Sophia Smith of the Portland Thorns.
Bonmatí’s individual accolades include being named the Women’s Champions League Player of the Season for 2023-24 and receiving the Player of the Match award in the Champions League final against Lyon. She made 41 appearances in all competitions last season, scoring 19 goals and setting up 17 more.
To celebrate her achievement, FC Barcelona has launched a social media campaign titled ‘How to be the best,’ which features Bonmatí and fellow award winner Lamine Yamal, who won the Kopa Trophy for the best under-21 player. The campaign includes videos and photographs highlighting the importance of training, education, and effort in achieving success.
For the first time in Barcelona’s history, the club has designed a special shirt to commemorate Bonmatí’s second Ballon d’Or win. The shirt features the number 10, the Barça badge, and an illustration of Bonmatí with her name and a golden ball in the background).
