San Diego, CA – In a significant announcement, Alex Morgan, a prominent figure in women’s soccer, has revealed her decision to retire from professional soccer. Morgan, recognized as one of the greatest players in the history of the sport, will conclude her esteemed career this Sunday, September 8, at Snapdragon Stadium while playing for San Diego Wave FC.

At 35 years old, Morgan expressed clarity in her retirement decision, stating, “It has been a long time coming, and this decision wasn’t easy.” Her illustrious career spans over 13 years, marked by extraordinary achievements on both national and international stages. Morgan’s impressive record includes over 200 goals and 88 assists across 337 appearances in club and international play.

Throughout her professional career, Morgan has amassed numerous accolades, including being named U.S. Soccer Female Athlete of the Year twice, and FIFA FIFPRO Women’s World 11 selection multiple times. She is celebrated as the all-time leading goalscorer and assist provider for San Diego Wave FC, with 28 goals and 11 assists respectively.

On the international front, Morgan has represented the U.S. Women’s National Team since 2010, earning 224 caps and scoring 123 goals, making her one of the top scorers in the team’s history. Furthermore, she played pivotal roles in securing the FIFA Women’s World Cup titles in 2015 and 2019, along with earning a gold medal in the 2012 Olympics.

Having played for various clubs, including Orlando Pride and Olympique Lyonnais, Morgan had a notable career in the NWSL before signing with San Diego Wave FC in 2022. Her influence transcends the pitch, as she champions gender equality through initiatives such as the Alex Morgan Foundation, which supports young girls in sports.

In addition to her retirement, Morgan has announced she is expecting her second child, adding to the joy of her family, which already includes her first child, Charlie, born in May 2020. The San Diego Wave FC is set to honor Morgan’s remarkable career during the club’s final home match on November 3 at Snapdragon Stadium.
