MANCHESTER, England — Manchester United winger Amad Diallo is expected to miss the remainder of the season following an ankle injury sustained during training. The injury, confirmed by club officials, is a significant setback for both the player and head coach Ruben Amorim, who is already facing a depleted squad.

Diallo’s injury came just days ahead of United’s crucial Premier League match against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, making the timing particularly unfortunate. The 21-year-old Ivorian international had been in remarkable form, scoring six goals in his last 14 appearances and recently earning a five-and-a-half-year contract valued at approximately £100,000 per week.

“It was a good week until two days ago, we had some problems,” Amorim stated in a press conference on Friday. “We have players who are sick and others with injuries, and we will see who is fit for the weekend.”

Alongside Diallo, midfielder Kobbie Mainoo is also expected to be sidelined for several weeks due to a separate injury. Manuel Ugarte and Toby Collyer, who both suffered injuries in training this week, are likely to miss the match against Spurs as well. With these additional absences, United’s options in midfield have become increasingly limited.

“Mainoo’s injury is concerning,” Amorim added, noting the depth issues created by his players’ injuries. “We are short on numbers, but we will adapt and find solutions.”

With Diallo and the others unavailable, Amorim may have to rely on experienced players like Christian Eriksen or Casemiro in the midfield against Tottenham. Additionally, 19-year-old Jack Moorhouse is set to join the squad, marking his potential debut after impressing for the under-21s.

Diallo’s absence will be felt not only in terms of skills but also the dynamism he brought to the attacking lineup, especially after the departures of Marcus Rashford and Antony in the January transfer window. Diallo had established himself as a key player under Amorim, contributing to crucial moments in matches.

In addition to Diallo and Mainoo, long-term absentees include Lisandro Martinez, Luke Shaw, Mason Mount, and Jonny Evans, further complicating Amorim’s strategic options as he prepares for a challenging upcoming schedule.

Lisandro Martinez recently underwent surgery for a torn anterior cruciate ligament and is expected to be out for the rest of the season. Meanwhile, the team finds itself languishing in 13th place in the Premier League, 28 points behind leaders Liverpool, adding to the urgency of improving performances on the pitch.

While Diallo’s situation remains fluid as he undergoes assessments, the injury has already sparked a renewed focus on United’s need to bolster their squad during transfer windows to avoid such predicaments in the future.
