Auburn University Searches for New Football Coach After Freeze’s Dismissal
AUBURN, Ala. — Auburn University is on the hunt for a new head football coach following the dismissal of Hugh Freeze, who was let go after a disappointing 15-19 record in two-plus seasons. Athletic Director John Cohen announced the decision on Sunday.
Freeze’s tenure at Auburn concluded with a home loss to Kentucky, bringing the Tigers to a 4-5 overall record and 1-5 in the Southeastern Conference (SEC). Cohen emphasized the need for leadership that aligns with Auburn’s championship expectations.
In a statement, Cohen expressed appreciation for Freeze’s dedication to the program but indicated that a change was necessary to achieve the school’s football goals. Freeze, who is owed $15.8 million in buyout money, commented on the transition, expressing gratitude for his time at Auburn.
During Freeze’s time at Auburn, the team’s offensive struggles were evident, scoring 24 or fewer points in 17 of 22 SEC games. The Tigers saw competitive moments but ultimately fell short in critical matchups, including losses that sparked fan calls for his dismissal.
As Auburn begins its search for the next head coach, several candidates have emerged as potential fits. Names like Tulane’s Jon Sumrall, Georgia Tech’s Brent Key, and Missouri’s Eli Drinkwitz are among those speculated to be on the short list.
Sumrall, a native of Huntsville, Alabama, has gained traction for his success at Troy and Tulane, while Key has established a strong reputation for winning in the ACC. Drinkwitz, known for his offensive prowess at Missouri, also has SEC experience that could potentially elevate Auburn back to a competitive level.
While Auburn faces competition from other opening programs such as LSU and Florida, the search for a coach capable of revitalizing the program begins immediately. Cohen aims to find a leader who can restore Auburn’s football identity and competitiveness within the SEC.
The Tigers have been through three head coaches in as many years, including Gus Malzahn and Bryan Harsin, and will strive to find stability in their next leader. With vast resources and a dedicated fan base, Auburn holds the potential to return to championship contention.
