The Brisbane Lions have surged into the top four of the AFL ladder with a hard-fought victory over a determined West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium. The Lions clinched their sixth consecutive win, overcoming a spirited Eagles side inspired by the recent departure of their coach, Adam Simpson.

Lachie Neale, a dual Brownlow medallist, was instrumental in the Lions’ victory with a stellar performance that included 13 clearances and two crucial goals, one of which came in the tense final moments.

Joining Neale in the midfield dominance were Hugh McCluggage and Josh Dunkley, who provided strong support in the stoppage battle against the Eagles. Meanwhile, an even team effort saw six Lions players kick two goals each, including Joe Daniher and Eric Hipwood.

West Coast, under the interim coaching of Jarrad Schofield, put up a strong fight, with standout performances from senior midfielders Tim Kelly and Elliot Yeo. The Eagles, however, faced challenges when co-captain Liam Duggan was sidelined with a concussion following a tackle from Charlie Cameron.

The Eagles started the game with intensity and took an early lead, but the Lions capitalized on their chances and managed to stay ahead despite the Eagles’ resilience. Both teams displayed high-pressure gameplay throughout the match.

As the game progressed, Brisbane’s clearance dominance became a key factor in their success, with the Lions showcasing precise ball movement and excellent inside 50 kicking. Cam Rayner emerged as a difference-maker, contributing two crucial goals.

In the final quarter, the Eagles made a late charge, cutting the margin to 12 points with ten minutes to play. However, young Lions forward Kai Lohmann stepped up, kicking two important goals to secure the win and propel Brisbane into the top four.

The match was also marked by emotional moments, including Adam Simpson‘s farewell speech to the Eagles fans and the milestone celebration for Jarrod Berry’s 150th game with the Lions.
