Byron Donalds Florida Governor Campaign

Bonita Springs, Florida — GOP Representative Byron Donalds announced his campaign for Florida governor in 2026, backed by former President Donald Trump. In an interview with Fox News Digital, Donalds expressed confidence that Trump’s endorsement would benefit his campaign.

Democrats face significant challenges in the upcoming election cycle. The last time a Democrat won the governor’s office was in 1994 with Lawton Chiles. Former Republican Congressman David Jolly, now a Democrat, is also running for governor and aims to end the Democrats’ losing streak.

“We have an affordability crisis in Florida driven by an insurance crisis that continues to worsen due to neglect by Tallahassee,” Jolly stated. He believes that this crisis, along with issues in public education and corruption, showcases a need for change in leadership.

Jolly, who left the Republican Party seven years ago, said, “There aren’t enough Democratic votes for a Democratic governor to win solely with their party. We need to build a coalition that includes independents and reasonable Republicans.” He pointed to positive turnout from these groups at town halls he has held.

Jolly added, “This is a race similar to the ones seen with Andy Beshear in Kentucky and Steve Bullock in Montana. A coalition for change can win next November, but it needs to be led by the Democratic Party today.” He hired strategist Eric Hyers, known for his work with successful campaigns in other states.

Republicans are skeptical of Jolly’s campaign, with Florida Republican Party Chair Evan Power calling him a failed candidate who is not likely to succeed. He noted that Jolly will be the latest potential candidate trying to overcome the party’s stronghold in Florida.

Adding to the complexity of the race, state Senator Jason Pizzo announced his independent run for governor, arguing that the Florida Democratic Party was “dead.” Jolly respected Pizzo’s political convictions but disagreed with his decision to run as an independent.

In the Republican primary, Byron Donalds is seen as the frontrunner. He enjoys broad support, including Trump’s endorsement, which he believes will resonate with voters. Donalds stated, “This race is not about Donald Trump but about the affordability crisis and how Republicans have created it in Tallahassee.”

As the election nears, the political landscape in Florida continues to evolve, making the coming months critical for all candidates in the governor’s race.
