Canadian Snowbirds Headline San Francisco Fleet Week

SAN FRANCISCO, California — The annual Fleet Week in San Francisco began on October 5 and runs through October 13. This year, the event is under a cloud of uncertainty due to a federal government shutdown that has grounded the U.S. Navy‘s Blue Angels and limited military attractions.
Despite the restrictions, organizers promise exciting aerial displays will take place. The Canadian Snowbirds will headline the air show, which also features performances by the Patriots Jet Team and other civilian aircraft.
“We are disappointed we can’t fly alongside our U.S. military brothers and sisters,” said Maj. Brent Handy, a pilot with the Snowbirds. “But our show is quite spectacular and I think people will enjoy it.”
Business owners in the area are concerned about potential lower turnout. Sal Chiavino, owner of Red’s Java House, expressed hope that even a smaller event could draw crowds to the waterfront, noting its importance for local businesses.
This year’s Fleet Week typically brings around 1.2 million visitors to the city, generating significant revenue. However, the absence of military presence has led to gloom among some businesses. “It’s a big deal for us, and I honestly don’t know how it will go,” Chiavino added.
Attendees also expressed disappointment about the Blue Angels’ absence. “We booked our tickets as soon as they went on sale. We were definitely intent on seeing them,” said visitor Lynda Castle.
While the crowds seem smaller than usual, some are optimistic. “The Snowbirds perform rarely in the U.S. It’s a unique opportunity,” said attendee Henry Demyan.
The airshows are scheduled to continue through Sunday, with the Snowbirds set to take off at 2 p.m. each day, providing a silver lining to an otherwise scaled-down Fleet Week.
