Chongqing: The New Cyberpunk Destination Captivating Tourists

CHONGQING, China—Chongqing, a megacity built on mountains, has become a must-see destination for travelers worldwide. Its dramatic skyline and unique architecture are drawing in increasing numbers of tourists exploring this vibrant city. Last year alone, Chongqing welcomed 120 million overnight visitors, reflecting a 17% increase compared to 2023.
American retirees Bev and John Martin were among those captivated by Chongqing’s sights. ‘It was just this feast for your eyes everywhere you turn,’ said Bev, 62. The city’s blend of futuristic structures and stunning mountain views offers visitors a glimpse into a world that feels like science fiction.
Chongqing was not always a tourist hotspot. Previously known mostly for its population—estimated at 32 million—and its historical significance during World War II, the city has transformed its image in recent years. Viral videos highlighting its striking architecture have sparked interest, encouraging both domestic and international travelers to visit.
Despite limited direct flights from Europe and the U.S., travel to Chongqing is growing. Many international tourists must transit through Beijing or Shanghai. A record number of foreign nationals passed through Chongqing’s border checkpoints during the first half of this year, although the figure remains modest at 330,000, making it a less crowded destination.
Social media influencers have played a significant role in promoting Chongqing. Local musician Ryan Chen, known as ‘Chinese Trump,’ has gained fame for his entertaining impressions while sampling the city’s famous spicy hot pot. Similarly, Jackson Lu, a tour guide, attracted millions by showcasing the city’s dramatic, spiraling bus rides. Lu noted the nostalgic contrast of modern skyscrapers alongside older buildings. ‘There’s this clash between the old and the new,’ he said.
For travelers like Felix Donaldson, a 29-year-old researcher from the U.K., navigating Chongqing has become significantly easier due to translation and payment apps. However, he noted one discomfort—the prevalence of squat toilets.
As Chongqing continues to grow and evolve, tourists like Bev and John Martin document their adventures, sharing insights about the city’s stunning food streets and the Yangtze River aerial tram. ‘Chongqing was the unknown but fabulous city that you need to visit,’ Bev stated enthusiastically.
