Coco Gauff China Open 2023

Coco Gauff, currently ranked world number six, emerged victorious at the China Open by defeating unseeded Czech player Karolina Muchova. This victory marks Gauff’s eighth Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) title and her first since January. The American fourth seed showed a powerful performance, especially after overcoming earlier struggles with her serve during the tournament. Gauff’s win came with a decisive score of 6-1, 6-3, completing the match in just one hour and 17 minutes.

“I guess the Imperial Palace brought us luck, so maybe I will pay a visit next year to get the same luck,” Gauff jested to the audience, referring to her visit to Beijing’s Forbidden City.

Gauff capitalized on Muchova’s errors to claim two breaks of serve in the opening set, which she won in just 30 minutes. Muchova, ranked 49th and a former top-10 player, had previously defeated top competitors such as Aryna Sabalenka and Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen. However, she was unable to keep up with Gauff’s formidable power and athleticism in the final.

The second set saw Muchova take an initial lead of 2-0 after Gauff’s serving issues briefly resurfaced. Nevertheless, Gauff quickly turned the tides, winning four consecutive games. Muchova’s 24th unforced error, a long backhand, ultimately handed Gauff the title.

Post-match, Gauff graciously congratulated her opponent. “I want to say congratulations to you, Karolina, it’s great to see you back on tour,” she said. “I think you’re such an amazing player—you deserve everything and hopefully you play many more finals.”

This victory also marks Gauff’s successful partnership with her new coach, Matt Daley. “Obviously things are going well,” Gauff observed, acknowledging this triumph as their first tournament win together. Gauff recently ended her collaboration with former coach Brad Gilbert following a fourth-round exit at the US Open.

The win propels Gauff to fourth place in the Race to the Finals, a prestigious year-end event set to occur in Riyadh in November, where the top seven rankers will compete. Her next challenge is the Wuhan Open, beginning next week.

Off the court, Gauff addressed comments on social media. In response to criticism about her mentality, she replied, “Honestly kids have the best outlook on life. They are so positive and creative. So I’ll take it.” Gauff also humorously engaged with fans, explaining her sporadic online presence as a form of procrastination. “I’m bored and procrastinating on packing,” she confessed.
