ALLEN PARK, Mich. — The Detroit Lions have released veteran offensive tackle Dan Skipper, according to reports on August 25, 2025. Skipper, 30, has been a part of the Lions’ roster for multiple seasons, but his departure comes as a surprise to many fans and analysts.

Skipper, who stands six feet ten inches tall, originally joined the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Dallas Cowboys in 2017. He spent a short time in Dallas before signing with the Lions’ practice squad shortly after. Throughout his career, he has bounced between teams, including stints with the Denver Broncos, New England Patriots, and Houston Texans, before returning to Detroit in 2021.

Known for his versatility, Skipper served as the Lions’ backup tackle behind starters Taylor Decker and Penei Sewell. He appeared in 44 games over the last three seasons, making 11 starts, with five starts coming in the past year. His notable on-field moment occurred during a 2023 game against the Dallas Cowboys, where he was mistakenly identified as an eligible receiver during a key two-point conversion attempt.

This year, Skipper participated in training camp but struggled against formidable defensive players during practice. Despite his experience, the Lions may have felt comfortable moving forward with younger talent. Fourth-round pick Giovanni Manu appears to have grown significantly, potentially earning the backup spot instead of Skipper. Veteran Jamarco Jones, who has battled injuries, could also be a factor in the team’s decision.

Since Skipper is a vested veteran, he becomes a free agent immediately, giving him the opportunity to sign with another team. However, it is possible he could be re-signed to the Lions’ practice squad if he does not secure a new contract quickly. Detroit’s management has expressed its appreciation for Skipper’s toughness and dedication during his time with the team.

“He’s tough, he’s smart, he’s gritty,” head coach Dan Campbell said earlier this season. “He fits everything that we’re about.”

The Lions are expected to finalize their roster moves ahead of the upcoming season, and fans will be watching closely to see if Skipper finds a new opportunity elsewhere.
