FAAN Shuts Down KFC Outlet at Lagos Airport Over Discriminatory Treatment Allegations
The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria has taken action against a branch of the popular fast-food chain KFC located at the Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos State. This decision came after a report by a Passenger with Reduced Mobility (PRM) surfaced on social media, alleging discriminatory treatment at the airport. The situation was in violation of the Lagos State law on People with Special Needs, specifically Part C, Section 55 on Discrimination.
According to the statement signed by the Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Mrs. Obiageli Orah, the chain outlet at the airport was closed on March 28, 2024, as a direct response to the reported incident. The Managing Director/Chief Executive, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, promptly intervened by deploying a team to investigate the allegations, including the Regional Manager South West, Mr. Sunday Ayodele, among others.
The PRM, identified as Daniel, shared his ordeal on social media, detailing how he and his companions were barred entry at the KFC outlet due to the use of a wheelchair. Despite attempts to reason with the staff, they were told that wheelchairs are not allowed within the premises, leading to a confrontation described as humiliating and dehumanizing by Daniel.
Daniel emphasized his determination not to let the incident pass unnoticed, expressing his intention to pursue the matter until a resolution is reached. With a significant portion of the population living with disabilities in Nigeria, he highlighted the importance of treating all individuals with respect and inclusivity.
Following the allegations of discriminatory practices, KFC responded on social media reaffirming their commitment to upholding values of inclusivity and respect, denouncing any form of bias or discrimination. The closure of the KFC outlet at the Lagos airport by FAAN serves as a reminder of the importance of adherence to anti-discrimination laws and promoting equal access for all individuals.
