Columbia University Pro Palestinian Protest

NEW YORK (AP) — Mahmoud Khalil, a Columbia University graduate student and activist, is facing potential deportation after a federal memo was submitted by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, citing authority to expel noncitizens deemed harmful to U.S. foreign policy.

The memo does not allege any criminal activity by Khalil, who is a legal permanent resident. Khalil gained attention for his role in pro-Palestinian protests last year, which occurred in response to Israel’s actions in Gaza.

According to documents acquired by The Associated Press, the memo specifically references the Trump administration’s stance, claiming that Khalil’s presence could damage American foreign policy interests.

“This is an outright attack on academic freedom and free speech,” said Khalil’s attorney, who argued that the actions taken against Khalil are meant to silence dissent. “He has only exercised his rights as a student and an American resident. We will vigorously fight this decision.”

The U.S. government has not disclosed the specifics of how Khalil’s participation in protests could be interpreted as a threat. His supporters argue that such claims are baseless and politically motivated.

In recent months, Khalil has become a symbol of the struggle for Palestinian rights on university campuses across the nation, balancing activism with academic responsibilities.

The situation raises significant questions about the boundaries of protest and the potential consequences for students involved in politically charged movements.

Khalil’s case is set to be reviewed by an immigration judge in the coming weeks, as advocates continue to rally support on his behalf.
