Budapest, Hungary – The Hungarian national football team will face Armenia and Portugal in critical World Cup qualifiers, and head coach Marco Rossi is making adjustments following the suspension of striker Barnabás Varga.

During a press conference on September 30, Rossi addressed Varga’s absence and explored the possibility of midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai taking on a forward role. Rossi acknowledged the need for strategic changes while emphasizing the importance of the matches.

“We need to win against Armenia at home — that is essential,” Rossi stated. “We have to consider tactical aspects, especially since we will also be without Roland Sallai for the match.”

Rossi shared concerns about the team’s formations, pointing out the unique challenge of Varga’s absence. “There’s only Tóth Barna who plays a traditional striker role in the squad, but I have thoughts on players who could fit in.”

Rossi also reflected on previous matches, noting players like Ádám Nagy and the need for consistent performance. “Ádám hasn’t played for the national team since last November, but I believe he can return. His form will largely determine this.”

The coach discussed Szoboszlai’s versatility, implying he could potentially play up front if needed. “But if Dominik is a striker, who provides him with balls? He’s crucial in midfield and needs to be involved in all aspects of the game,” Rossi added.

The press conference also highlighted Tóth Balázs, who excelled during the match against Portugal, taking over in goal for the injured Dénes Dibusz. “The goalkeeper position is stable. Both Balázs and Dénes are reliable,” Rossi said. “This is less of a worry compared to the striker situation.”

The team is set to begin preparations for the qualifiers on October 6 in Telki. Key players include Dibusz, Szoboszlai, and Tóth Barna, among others. Rossi emphasized the urgent need to collect points to improve their standing in the group as they prepare for the challenges ahead.
