The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) has issued a final call to all South African citizens to register to vote or update their details before the midnight deadline on Friday. This announcement comes as the anticipated day of proclamation of the election date by President Cyril Ramaphosa and Limpopo Premier Stan Mathabatha has arrived. The IEC Provincial Electoral Officer in Limpopo, Nkaro Mateta, highlighted the importance of this deadline during a recent interview on Capricorn FM Talk.

Mateta mentioned that the IEC will officially publish the election timetable on Monday next week, including details such as the inspection of the voter’s roll. With just a few days left until the closure of voter registration, Mateta emphasized the significance of this process for ensuring that all eligible citizens participate in the upcoming elections on May 29. The IEC’s WhatsApp line (0600-88-00-00) has been made available for citizens to check their registration status and make necessary updates.

According to the latest update from the IEC, voter registrations have reached 27.6 million, reflecting the high interest and engagement of the South African population in the democratic process. As the country celebrates 30 years of democracy, the upcoming national and provincial elections hold significant importance for shaping the future of South Africa’s governance and leadership.

Citizens who wish to participate in the elections are required to present their green bar-coded ID books, smart ID cards, or temporary ID certificates for registration. The IEC has been actively encouraging eligible voters to take advantage of the remaining time before the deadline to ensure that their information is up to date and accurate for the voting process.

In a statement to TimesLIVE, the IEC reiterated the importance of citizen participation in the electoral process, emphasizing that every vote counts towards shaping the future of the nation. As the clock ticks down to the midnight deadline, the commission remains committed to facilitating a smooth and inclusive registration process for all eligible voters across South Africa.
