Indian T20 Cricket Squad 2024

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has unveiled its 15-member squad for the forthcoming three-match T20 International series against Bangladesh. The team will be captained by Suryakumar Yadav with the involvement of seasoned players such as Hardik Pandya and Arshdeep Singh. This announcement has, however, triggered significant discussions among fans and analysts regarding the selected squad.

One of the most talked-about absentees from the squad is Chennai Super Kings‘ captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, currently ranked ninth among ICC T20 batters. Gaikwad, who has made 633 runs in 23 T20 Internationals at an average of 39.56, was expected by many to be a definitive inclusion.

Similarly, Shreyas Iyer, the skipper of Kolkata Knight Riders who led his team to a victorious IPL 2024 campaign, is missing from the list. Iyer, who last represented India in T20 Internationals in December 2023, has faced disciplinary action from the BCCI for opting out of domestic matches despite being fit, resulting in his exclusion from the central contracts. Iyer has accumulated 1,104 runs across 51 matches with an average of 30.66.

Ishan Kishan is another noticeable exclusion. The left-handed batsman was also penalized by the BCCI for skipping domestic games. Despite Kishan’s recent form in domestic cricket, featuring multiple centuries, his exclusion remains unresolved according to sources.

The selected squad will see players like Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, Rinku Singh among others, with Jitesh Sharma as the backup wicketkeeper. Varun Chakaravarthy makes a return to the national side after a prolonged hiatus since his participation in the T20 World Cup 2021.

Notably, Mayank Yadav, a pace bowler who has been in rehabilitation following an IPL injury, makes his debut into the national setup. Yadav demonstrated remarkable performance with consistent high-speed deliveries during his outings with Lucknow Super Giants, earning recognition with consecutive Player of the Match accolades.

The Indian team is set to face Bangladesh, led by Najmul Hossain Shanto, in matches scheduled in Gwalior, New Delhi, and Hyderabad on October 6, 9, and 12, respectively. This series offers Mayank Yadav an opportunity to exhibit his potential on an international platform as preparations for broader participation are underway.
