Inter Miami Shocks Fans with Ríos Novo as Starting Goalkeeper in Preseason Opener
LAS VEGAS, Nev. — Inter Miami CF surprised fans Saturday night by starting 22-year-old Argentine goalkeeper Rocco Ríos Novo in their preseason opener at Allegiant Stadium. The young shot-stopper, on loan from Club Atlético Lanús, took the field as part of the starting XI for the friendly match.
Ríos Novo, born in Los Angeles, California, but raised in Argentina, joined Inter Miami earlier this month. The goalkeeper has dual eligibility for Argentina, Mexico, and the United States, having represented Argentina at the U-15, U-16, and U-17 levels between 2017 and 2019.
“Our first XI of 2025 💗🖤👊,” Inter Miami CF tweeted ahead of the match, signaling a new era for the team. Ríos Novo’s inclusion marks a significant shift in the club’s strategy as they prepare for the 2025 MLS season.
The goalkeeper brings a wealth of experience despite his young age. After debuting professionally with Lanús in 2021, Ríos Novo spent time on loan with Atlanta United, where he made 16 appearances under Argentine coach Gabriel Heinze. He later shone in the USL Championship, earning the 2023 Final MVP award while on loan with Phoenix Rising.
Inter Miami’s 2025 campaign officially begins February 18, with their first MLS match scheduled for February 22. The team’s decision to start Ríos Novo in preseason suggests they may be grooming him for a larger role in the upcoming season.
In other Inter Miami news, the club recently announced the signing of defender Luján, who joined from San Lorenzo on a contract through 2027. The young center-back, who previously worked with Inter Miami coach Javier Mascherano in Argentina’s youth national teams, expressed excitement about his new challenge.
“It’s a privilege to join a top-level institution like this,” Luján told the club’s official website. “I’m excited to start a new chapter and will work hard to help my teammates.”
As Inter Miami continues to build its roster for 2025, the inclusion of young talents like Ríos Novo and Luján signals a focus on developing future stars while maintaining a competitive edge in MLS.
