Joe Daniher Contemplating Future as Brisbane Lions Prepare for AFL Grand Final
Brisbane Lions‘ key forward, Joe Daniher, is reportedly considering his future in the Australian Football League (AFL) as he prepares for the grand final against the Sydney Swans. At 30 years old, Daniher is evaluating his professional career options following the grand final, according to Seven News reporter Mitch Cleary. Although Daniher is under contract for the next season, discussions about his career path have intensified.
Daniher is set to play his 27th game of the season in the grand final, maintaining his durability since joining the Brisbane Lions in 2020 from the Essendon Football Club. His performance has drawn attention this season, with highlights including a four-goal tally that contributed to Brisbane’s dramatic semi-final victory over the Greater Western Sydney Giants.
During his tenure at Essendon, Daniher played 108 games, despite battling injuries that limited him to 15 matches in his last three years with the club. His father, Anthony Daniher, had a career split between Sydney and the Bombers, and Daniher himself was a father-son draft choice, ultimately beginning his AFL career with Essendon.
In recent seasons, the left-footed forward has become a significant player for the Lions, demonstrating both consistency and resilience on the field. Daniher’s skill was on full display during the preliminary final against Geelong, where his critical plays helped propel his team into the grand final.
Brisbane Lions coach Chris Fagan identified Daniher and his 35-year-old teammate, Dayne Zorko, as key players with aspirations to secure an AFL premiership before retiring. Fagan acknowledged their motivation stems from last season’s grand final defeat and their dwindling opportunities as veteran players. “I know they’re desperate to get back there and have another crack,” Fagan commented, expressing confidence in their determination to succeed.
As the grand final approaches, speculation regarding Daniher’s future continues, particularly because of his off-field lifestyle in Ocean Shores, a picturesque location two hours south of Brisbane. “Daniher is contracted for next year, but those at the club have made no secret in the past as to how much he enjoys living his life in the northern New South Wales beaches,” Cleary noted.
With his eyes on the grand final, Daniher’s immediate focus remains on delivering for his team on the field, where he is anticipated to play a vital role in their offensive strategy. Meanwhile, fans and analysts alike are eager to see how his AFL journey will unfold post-grand final.
