NEW YORK, NY — Joy Behar, co-host of “The View,” expressed her concerns on Tuesday regarding President Donald Trump‘s deployment of National Guard troops to U.S. cities, suggesting that this action could be a strategy to hinder future elections.

In the discussion, Behar stated, “This is a pretext to stop the next election. That’s what I think.” Her comments come as President Trump has ordered troops to be sent to cities including Portland and Chicago amidst rising crime rates.

Co-host Whoopi Goldberg added that Trump seems to feel empowered to take such actions. “This is in order to make the case, because in all of their minds, they now believe they have carte blanche to do whatever they want to,” Goldberg said.

Behar emphasized the importance of voting, saying, “And if they stop us from voting, that’s the one thing people have.” Goldberg responded, asserting, “It’s the one thing that makes us very different from lots of other countries. Our votes – they do count.” She expressed faith that Americans would find a way to vote regardless of the circumstances.

Concerns about the potential manipulation of elections have been echoed by Democratic governors, including Gavin Newsom of California and J.B. Pritzker of Illinois. Newsom remarked that he fears there may not be an election in 2028, while Pritzker accused Trump of wanting to “stop the elections in 2026, or, frankly, take control of those elections.”

Pritzker referred to Trump’s actions as an “invasion” and critiqued the administration for using federal troops to influence the electoral process. He said, “He’ll just claim that there’s some problem with an election, and then he’s got troops on the ground that can take control, if, in fact, he’s allowed to do this.”

Despite rising tensions surrounding Trump’s deployments, some officials have pointed to decreases in violent crime in areas where the National Guard has been utilized. Mayor Muriel Bowser of Washington, D.C., publicly thanked Trump for his efforts against crime earlier this year.

Behar’s remarks have sparked significant discussion about the implications of deploying military forces within U.S. cities and the integrity of upcoming elections.
