Leap Day Superstitions and Traditions Across Europe

Published

on

On this rare 29th February, various countries across Europe are alive with superstitions and customs tied to the leap day. In Greek folklore, it is believed that engagements or marriages during leap years are cursed, foretelling a grim future of divorce or the tragic loss of a partner. Conversely, Irish tradition allows women to propose to men on this day, known as Bachelor’s Day or Ladies’ Privilege.

Irish custom, stemming back to the 5th century, saw Saint Brigid of Kildare and Saint Patrick agreeing to women proposing every four years. If a woman’s proposal is turned down, tradition dictates that she should receive a gift, often a silk gown, as compensation. Scottish and Danish variations also require compensation for declined proposals.

In Scotland, those born on 29 February, known as ‘Leaplings’, are considered unlucky and destined for a life of suffering. German superstitions, on the other hand, label the entire leap year as unfortunate with the saying “Leap year means a cold year.” However, the German state of Rhineland has a charming tradition of decorating trees on May 1st as a symbol of love, with a leap year reversal where women partake in the gesture.

A unique belief in Reggio Emilia, Italy calls a leap year “l’ann d’la baleina” or “the whale’s year”, attributing this to whales giving birth during leap years. In the UK, bartender Harry Craddock concocted a special leap day drink in 1928 at the Savoy Hotel, while France celebrates the day with the publication of a satirical newspaper, La Bougie du Sapeur.

La Bougie du Sapeur, introduced in 1980, features the character Camember created by George Colomb. This French comic character, a soldier born on 29 February, is popular for its quirky humor and unique tradition with the leap day. These customs and superstitions add an extra layer of intrigue and celebration to this rare and special date in the European calendar.
