Maple Leafs Trade For Capitals' Joel Edmundson In Last Minute Deal

The Toronto Maple Leafs have made a significant move with the acquisition of defenseman Joel Edmundson from the Washington Capitals in a trade deal just 24 hours before the NHL trade deadline. The Leafs continue to shore up their defensive unit, adding experience and depth alongside Ilya Lyubushkin, who joined last week.

In exchange, the Leafs sent a third-round pick in the upcoming NHL draft and a fifth-round selection in 2025 to the Capitals. Washington will also cover 50% of Edmundson’s remaining salary.

Edmundson, a 30-year-old veteran set to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season, has recorded one goal and six assists in 44 games this year. Throughout his NHL career with the Blues, Hurricanes, Canadiens, and Capitals, he has accumulated 29 goals and 110 points in 521 games.

The Manitoba native has also contributed five goals and 21 points in 75 career NHL playoff games, winning the Stanley Cup with the Blues in 2019 and appearing in the Stanley Cup Final with the Canadiens in 2021.
