Modi Meets US Ambassador-Designate, Focus on Trade Amid Tensions

NEW DELHI, India — Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with US Ambassador-designate Sergio Gor on Saturday, marking an important dialogue amidst ongoing trade tensions between the two nations.
This meeting is the first high-level interaction since Gor’s Senate confirmation as the next American envoy to India. It follows a recent phone call between Modi and President Donald Trump, who reportedly holds Modi in high regard.
Gor described the meeting as “incredible” and stated, “We discussed bilateral issues, including defense, trade, and technology. We also discussed the importance of critical minerals.” He emphasized Trump’s personal friendship with Modi, noting they had a productive call just before Gor departed for New Delhi.
In a post on X, Modi expressed optimism regarding Gor’s tenure, writing, “Glad to receive Mr. Sergio Gor, Ambassador-designate of the US to India. I’m confident that his tenure will further strengthen the India–US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership.”
During his visit, Gor also met with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri. Gor noted the importance of discussing the India-US relationship and its global significance.
Despite the challenges posed by the imposition of 50 percent tariffs by the US on Indian exports, there is a sense of renewed hope for collaboration and economic synergy. Gor pointed out, “The US values its relationship with India,” highlighting that both nations’ leadership is keen on improving ties.
Gor’s visit comes amid strains in India-US relations, particularly related to increased tariffs on items including oil purchases from Russia. His quick Senate confirmation indicates a shift toward strengthening diplomatic relations, even during challenging times.
The US ambassador-designate is expected to submit his credentials in the coming days. Until then, he will engage with leaders in India to reinforce the strategic partnership between the two countries.
