Netflix Hires ESPN’s Elle Duncan for New Sports Venture
Los Angeles, CA — Netflix is expanding its sports portfolio by hiring Elle Duncan, an on-air personality from ESPN, as its first full-time sports host. This move comes amidst Netflix’s plans to broadcast more live sports programming in the future.
Duncan’s role at Netflix raises questions about her future with ESPN. Although discussions have taken place regarding her involvement with ESPN’s women’s basketball coverage, including the Women’s Final Four and WNBA Finals, no final decision has been made yet.
The details of Duncan’s contract with Netflix have not been finalized, but it is expected to enable her to work with other networks. In addition to her sports duties, she may also assist in other non-sports areas for the streaming service.
The Athletic reports that Duncan’s hiring indicates Netflix’s commitment to gaining a foothold in live sports, which already includes airing NFL games on Christmas Day and broadcasting WWE programming, as well as showcasing MLB’s opening game and the Home Run Derby in 2026.
As Netflix attempts to strengthen its presence in sports broadcasting, relationships with existing networks like ESPN have become strained. ESPN has reportedly been reluctant to share its talent with Netflix, declining requests for involvement in upcoming NFL games this December.
Duncan joined ESPN in 2016 and has been a notable figure as an anchor on “SportsCenter,” and as a host for “College GameDay” and “WNBA Countdown.” While Netflix expressed interest in hiring fellow ESPN star Malika Andrews, Andrews chose to re-sign with ESPN.
