DENVER, Colorado — The Denver Nuggets signed Christian Braun to a contract extension before the season started, but they opted not to do the same for teammate Peyton Watson. This decision means Watson, 23, is set to become a restricted free agent this summer.

The Nuggets are cautious about entering the second luxury tax apron, which would impose significant penalties, including restrictions on trading salaries and picks. Currently, Denver is $2.9 million below the first apron and $14.7 million below the second apron. Next season, however, they are projected to be only $1.2 million away from that threshold.

Despite the potential for Watson to remain with Denver, complications may arise. If he receives an offer sheet from another team, the Nuggets can match it, but that may not guarantee his stay. The collective bargaining agreement creates additional stress on NBA teams, making it hard to keep key players.

Fans have enjoyed watching Watson play this season; he has stepped up during injuries to teammates. He scored over 20 points in his last three games, including 23 points with 8-of-14 shooting on Sunday. Watson is averaging a career-high 11.8 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 1.5 assists in 27.9 minutes per game.

As the trade deadline approaches, teams are likely to inquire about Watson. The Nuggets find themselves in a difficult position, wanting to keep him while facing financial constraints. Head coach David Adelman expressed hope at media day that both Watson and Braun would be with the Nuggets for the long term.

Adelman has praised Watson for stepping up in a challenging season, stating, “Peyton has proven his worth, contributing significantly despite injuries.” With their top players like Nikola Jokic and Aaron Gordon absent, the Nuggets are relying heavily on younger players like Watson.

While no active trade discussions are confirmed, observers believe the Nuggets may explore options as Watson’s departure could become a reality. With the summer approaching, everything hinges on the developments surrounding his free agency.
