Philadelphia School District City College For Municipal Employment

The School District of Philadelphia has collaborated with the City of Philadelphia to introduce the City College for Municipal Employment (CCME), a new initiative aimed at providing employment training and career pathways in public service for local students. This program is part of a broader effort to make public service careers more accessible to all residents of Philadelphia.

Funded by a $10 million investment from the city, the CCME is designed to be a national model for municipal employment training. The program has already garnered significant interest, with over 1,000 inquiries from potential students. Currently, 40 students are enrolled in the Computer Support and Administrative Professional program, while an additional 37 students are participating in Career Readiness training and are expected to join CCME programs in spring 2025.

The CCME offers training in five key career pathways: skilled trades, healthcare, technology, business and administration, public safety, and STEM. This initiative is supported by partnerships with the Community College of Philadelphia, Philadelphia Works, and other local organizations. According to Mayor Cherelle Parker, the program aims to address recruitment challenges by leveraging local talent and providing streamlined access to well-paying and rewarding careers in public service.

Superintendent Tony Watlington of the School District of Philadelphia expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, highlighting the potential for the CCME to expand career pathways for students across the district. The program includes efforts to connect graduating seniors with work opportunities through both direct employment and skills training programs.

The partnership between the School District of Philadelphia and the CCME is seen as a significant step in preparing citizens for positions within the city, aligning with the mission of helping residents advance their lives and enrich their communities.
