1958 Ferrari 250 Gt Auction

A rare 1958 Ferrari 250 GT will be offered for sale at Christie’s upcoming “Exceptional Sale” on November 20 in Paris. This vintage vehicle, which boasts coachwork by Pininfarina SpA, is currently owned by actress Angelina Jolie, as confirmed by a spokesperson from Christie’s.

The black coupé, notable for its wire-spoke wheels, is one of only 353 such models produced between 1955 and 1960. Despite being a highly anticipated item in the auction, various details about the car’s history and condition remain undisclosed, including its provenance, mechanical state, and how much of the vehicle remains original.

The Ferrari 250 GT model line first made its debut at the 1958 Paris Motor Show with a 12-cylinder, 240-horsepower engine, equipped with advanced Weber carburetors. Originally designed by the newly established Pininfarina design house, the model line was part of Ferrari’s transition from the Boano and Ellena coupés to more sophisticated, higher-volume production cars.

According to Christie’s, the car maintains its original engine. However, it has reportedly undergone alterations, including a repaint in 1978 from its original white and blue color to black, with the interior switched from black to red. The odometer currently reads 64,244 miles, though it is uncertain whether this reflects the car’s true mileage.

The auction house has set an estimated value of between €600,000 (approximately ₹5.5 crore) and €800,000 (around ₹7.3 crore) for the car. This estimation occurs amidst a decline in the average values of 1958 Ferrari 250 GT models, which have dropped from $525,000 in October 2023 to $410,000 today, according to a report by Hagerty Inc. This decrease aligns with a broader cooling in the collector car market, highlighted by an 8% drop in auction sales from August 2023.

This auction follows Christie’s announcement of its acquisition of the automotive auction house Gooding & Co., a strategic move aimed at broadening Christie’s auction portfolio during a period of instability in the art market. Despite this acquisition, Gooding & Co. is not involved in the sale of Jolie’s Ferrari.

The vehicle will be publicly displayed on November 14, 16, and 20 at Christie’s Paris showroom, allowing potential buyers and car enthusiasts to view this rare piece of automotive history before the auction.
