Renowned Pianist Maurizio Pollini Passes Away at 82
Highly esteemed Italian pianist Maurizio Pollini, who captivated audiences at La Scala opera house in Milan, has tragically passed away at the age of 82.
An announcement from La Scala did not disclose the cause of Pollini’s death, but his health had hindered a performance cancellation at the Salzburg Festival in 2022.
Throughout his prolific six-decade
career, Pollini’s musical range expanded to encompass works by renowned composers like Igor Stravinsky, Arnold Schoenberg, Anton Webern, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Pierre Boulez, and Luigi Nono.
A revered figure in the world of music, Pollini was described by La Scala as ‘one of the great musicians of our time and a fundamental reference in the artistic life of the theater for over 50 years.’
Born in Milan on January 5, 1942, Pollini grew up in an artistic household, with his father, Gino Pollini, being a prominent architect and violinist, and his mother, Renata Melotti, a talented singer and pianist.
