Rep. Mikie Sherrill Announces Bid for New Jersey Governor
Rep. Mikie Sherrill, a Democrat from New Jersey, has officially launched her campaign to become the state’s next governor. Sherrill, who was first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2018 and reelected this year, made the announcement in a video posted on YouTube early Monday morning.
Sherrill, a former U.S. Navy helicopter pilot and federal prosecutor, is entering her fourth term in Congress. She does not need to resign her House seat to run for governor. In her announcement, Sherrill emphasized her commitment to making New Jersey more affordable for its residents, addressing issues such as healthcare, groceries, and childcare.
The Democratic field for the gubernatorial race is becoming increasingly crowded. Sherrill joins fellow Democratic U.S. House member Josh Gottheimer, who announced his candidacy last week, as well as Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop, teachers union president Sean Spiller, and former state Senate President Steve Sweeney. On the Republican side, candidates include state Sen. Jon Bramnick, former state legislator Jack Ciattarelli, former state Sen. Ed Durr, and radio host Bill Spadea.
Current Governor Phil Murphy is term-limited and cannot run for re-election in 2025. Sherrill’s campaign is highlighted by her military background and her experience as a federal prosecutor, which she believes will be crucial in addressing the state’s economic challenges).
