Jeremiah Smith Ohio State Wide Receiver

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio State Head Coach Ryan Day stirred excitement on Tuesday by comparing standout wide receiver Jeremiah Smith to NBA legend LeBron James. During an appearance on FOX Sports’ ‘Bear Bets,’ Day emphasized Smith’s unique combination of size, talent, discipline, and skill set.

Day’s praise comes after Smith’s record-breaking freshman year, where he set the Ohio State record for most receiving yards by a freshman with 1,315 yards and led the Big Ten with 15 touchdowns. His performances have continued this season, as he already leads the conference with 35 catches for 463 yards and six touchdowns through just five games.

‘He’s somebody who is very unique,’ Day said. ‘He’s got the size, he’s got the talent, but he also has the discipline and the skill set.’ Smith’s exceptional work ethic and mentality are what make him stand out, according to Day. ‘You don’t have to tell him to go hard. That’s just the way he’s wired.’

Smith’s impressive performances were evident in Ohio State’s recent game against Minnesota, where he caught seven passes for 67 yards and two touchdowns. His ability to perform under pressure has made him a target for opposing teams, opening opportunities for other players on the field.

Smith recalled a moment during the Minnesota game when he drew multiple defenders, allowing teammate Carnell Tate to score. ‘When that happened, I saw all of them run at me, I just started laughing in their face,’ Smith said. ‘I just threw my hand up ’cause I knew it was a touchdown.’

Day also highlighted Smith’s influence on the team, calling him an example for teammates. ‘He is one of the hardest workers. And it’s just good for the culture of the team,’ Day said.

With a matchup against Illinois on the horizon, Day acknowledged the challenge that lies ahead. ‘To me, this is like a top-10 matchup,’ he said. ‘This is a very, very good team.’ As Ohio State looks to build on their nine-game winning streak against Illinois, all eyes will be on Smith and the team’s continued dominance on both sides of the ball.
