Seahawks Linebacker Duo: Rising Star Derick Hall and Veteran Demarcus Lawrence

RENTON, Wash. — As the Seattle Seahawks training camp progresses, an intriguing dynamic is forming between veteran linebacker Demarcus Lawrence and third-year player Derick Hall. During a recent practice, Lawrence took the lead in helping Hall improve his technique with hands-on instruction.
“Always think,” Lawrence advised Hall, “I’m going to beat him on the second move. The first move is to set him up.” This moment was indicative of the mentorship developing between the 12-year veteran and the younger player.
Defensive tackle Leonard Williams reflected on their relationship, saying, “We joke around saying D-Law has the little brother he never had, and D-Hall has the big brother he never had. They’re both competitive but also supportive. D-Law is a great veteran for Hall at this stage of his career.”
Lawrence, who signed with Seattle in March after 11 seasons with the Dallas Cowboys, brings critical experience to the Seahawks’ outside linebacker position. Coach Mike Macdonald noted that Lawrence’s attention to detail sets a high standard for the defense, stating, “He’s the best drill player I’ve ever seen in my life.”
Hall, a second-round pick in 2023, is coming off a season in which he recorded 8.0 sacks, significantly improving from a challenging rookie year. His progress is evident, and he attributes some of that growth to Lawrence’s guidance. “It’s the perfect timing for him to be here,” Hall said. “The way he approaches everything is intentional.”
Seattle is rebuilding its defense, looking for stronger physicality and performance after last season’s challenges. With Lawrence helping mold Hall’s talents, the Seahawks believe they can enhance their defensive lineup significantly.
Lawrence’s role appears vital, especially as linebacker Uchenna Nwosu faces uncertainty due to health concerns. As the competition heats up, Hall’s advancement alongside Lawrence could prove crucial for Seattle’s defensive success.
“Having D-Law as a mentor and working together is going to create something nasty on the field,” said defensive tackle Jarran Reed.
