Shubman Gill Cricket Injury Kolkata Test

Kolkata, India – Indian Test captain Shubman Gill will miss the remainder of the ongoing Test match against South Africa due to neck spasms, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed on Sunday morning.

Gill, who retired hurt during the second day of the Test, was taken to the hospital for examination after experiencing discomfort shortly after starting his innings. He was wearing a neck brace and was accompanied by the team doctor when he was stretchered off the field.

The injury came after Gill swept Simon Harmer to score a boundary, but he immediately called for the physio as he clutched the back of his neck. He did not return to bat as India was bowled out for 189.

Before the start of Day 3, BCCI released a statement saying, “He is currently under observation in the hospital. He will take no further part in the Test match. He will continue to be monitored by the BCCI medical team.”

India’s bowling coach, Morne Morkel, described the situation as “unfortunate” but ruled out major concerns over Gill’s health. He said, “Gill is a very fit guy. It’s just unfortunate this morning that he woke up with a stiff neck, which was crucial for us.”

In Gill’s absence, Rishabh Pant took over the captaincy as South Africa struggled at 93/7, holding a slim lead of 63 runs in their second innings. The visitors have not won a Test match in India since 2010, and their last victory at Eden Gardens occurred in 1996.

As the situation unfolds, supporters and team members are hoping for a swift recovery for Gill.
