Pittsburgh Steelers Darnell Washington 2024 Touchdown

Pittsburgh Steelers tight end Darnell Washington has taken a significant step forward in his second NFL season, becoming a more prominent part of the team’s offense. During the 2024 regular season, Washington was targeted 23 times, compared to just 10 targets in his rookie year. He has capitalized on those opportunities, catching 19 passes for 200 yards, averaging 10.5 yards per reception—nearly two yards more than his rookie average.

Washington also recorded his first NFL touchdown in Week 2 against the Denver Broncos, a five-yard reception that showcased his growing role as a reliable receiving option. Beyond his receiving skills, Washington has continued to excel as a blocking tight end, making him a versatile asset for the Steelers.

Despite his progress, Washington narrowly missed a second touchdown in a recent game against the Cincinnati Bengals. A six-yard pass from quarterback Russell Wilson fell incomplete due to pass interference by Bengals cornerback Cam Taylor-Britt. The play highlighted Washington’s potential as a red-zone threat, an area where the Steelers have struggled this season.

Head coach Mike Tomlin has expressed confidence in Washington’s unique skill set, particularly in critical situations. “We had some awesome days in Latrobe pinning him against a variety of defenders in those circumstances,” Tomlin said. “He has a unique body, a unique skill set, and we are interested in utilizing it. We have in the past, and certainly, as you get into the single-elimination tournament, we’re gonna use it.”

The Steelers’ red-zone struggles have been a recurring issue in 2024. During a four-game losing streak to end the regular season, the team reached the red zone just twice in three of those games. However, they showed improvement in their final game against the Bengals, scoring on both red-zone trips. Washington’s involvement could be key to sustaining that momentum in the playoffs.

Despite his potential, Washington has seen limited targets in recent weeks. He was targeted only once during the losing streak, catching an eight-yard pass against the Kansas City Chiefs. However, his performance in earlier games, such as a two-catch, 42-yard outing against the Baltimore Ravens, suggests he could play a larger role in the postseason.

As the Steelers prepare for their playoff run, Washington’s ability to contribute both as a receiver and blocker could prove crucial. With Tomlin’s endorsement and the team’s need for red-zone efficiency, Washington may finally get the opportunity to shine on a bigger stage.
