Suspect Identified in Tactical Incident in Southwest Portland
PORTLAND, Ore. — Authorities have identified the suspect arrested during a tactical incident in Southwest Portland on January 6, 2026. Jonathan W. Cook, 43, was taken into custody by the Portland Police Bureau (PPB) tactical teams after barricading himself inside a residence.
The incident began at around 5:05 p.m. when officers responded to reports of a burglary in the 600 block of Southwest Sherman Street. Upon arrival, officers found Cook had barricaded himself and refused to comply with commands for over two hours.
The PPB’s Special Emergency Reaction Team (SERT) and Crisis Negotiation Team (CNT) were then called to the scene to assist. Streets surrounding the area were cordoned off, and nearby residents were advised to shelter in place during the standoff.
At approximately 10:45 p.m., PPB successfully apprehended Cook, who has now been charged with burglary in the first degree. He was transported to the Multnomah County Detention Center.
A PPB spokesperson expressed gratitude for the community’s patience during the incident, stating that they worked diligently to ensure a safe resolution. The shelter-in-place request was lifted shortly after Cook’s arrest.
This tactical incident highlights ongoing challenges for law enforcement in the area, as they comply with procedures to manage potentially dangerous situations effectively.
