Tennessee’s JP Estrella Out with Left Leg Injury Against Rice
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Tennessee sophomore forward J.P. Estrella left the game against Rice on Monday night with a left leg injury, cutting short a promising performance.
Estrella was injured during the first half with just 1:26 remaining. While attempting to secure a loose ball, a Rice player inadvertently pushed Estrella’s left leg back, causing him to collapse to the court in pain. Team trainers quickly assisted him off the floor, and Estrella was taken up the tunnel rather than to the bench.
Before his injury, Estrella had four points and one rebound in nine minutes of play. The 6-foot-11 player has been a breakout star for the Volunteers this season, averaging 17.3 points and 8.7 rebounds in the first three games. He recorded double-doubles in two of those games.
Tennessee head coach Rick Barnes had praised Estrella recently, commenting on his improved focus and determination in practice. “His mindset has changed. I mean, I think missing a year. We knew that would take a little bit of time, but he’s gotten so much better,” Barnes said.
Estrella’s injury comes as a disappointment to the team, as they were looking to build on their early success this season. He had previously missed significant time due to foot surgery last year, which restricted his playtime to just three games.
The Volunteers saw key contributions from seniors Felix Okpara and Ja’Kobi Gillespie in the first half against Rice, establishing a lead before the incident. Tennessee held a 39-26 advantage at halftime.
The team is scheduled to host Tennessee State at Food City Center on Thursday at 7 p.m. ET before heading to Las Vegas for the Players Era Men’s Championship.
As of now, Estrella’s status remains uncertain, and updates will be provided as the team evaluates his condition moving forward.
