Los Angeles, CA – Terrell Owens, the Pro Football Hall of Famer, is set to make an appearance in the NBA All-Star Celebrity Game on Friday, showcasing his dual-sport talent rooted in his days as a college basketball player at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. Owens, who transitioned to a successful NFL career after playing basketball, is expected to leverage his athletic background during the high-profile celebrity matchup.

Owens’ athletic journey began well before he made a name in football. He played basketball at Chattanooga from 1993 to 1996, contributing to the team’s NCAA Tournament appearances during his tenure. Although best known for his accomplishments on the football field, including leaving Chattanooga as the leader in receiving yards and touchdowns, Owens’ basketball experience has not faded from memory.

“He was a great, great teammate,” said Mack McCarthy, Owens’ college basketball coach. “He really cared about competing and winning. He positively made us better. He could guard any position. His effort was unbelievable. You didn’t want to be embarrassed by him.”

Prior to fully committing to football, Owens almost quit the sport during his high school years in Alexander City, Alabama, because of his love for basketball. His high school basketball coach, Steve Savarese, encouraged him to remain in football, igniting his competitive spirit that eventually led him to excel in both sports.

<p“Basketball was his first love, and I told him he wasn't putting any effort into football,” Savarese recounted. “All of a sudden, he took my challenge. He’s a competitor, and he started working out twice a day.”

In terms of his collegiate statistics, Owens played 38 games across three seasons at Chattanooga, averaging 6.1 points and 1.3 assists during the 1994-95 season. Despite his focus on football later in his college career, Owens’ roots in basketball remain significant to his identity as an athlete.

The upcoming celebrity game is attracting other prominent names, such as Kai Cenat and country music star Walker Hayes, turning it into an event with considerable buzz. Owens’ participation brings an added layer of intrigue, especially given his history as an athlete capable of crossing into different sports.

Fans are eager to see how he performs on the court, especially as he has participated in various charity basketball games post-NFL. While footage from his college days is scant, T.O. has consistently shown the agility and competitiveness he is known for.

Overall, Owens’ participation underscores his multifaceted athletic abilities and the crossover appeal between sports, potentially leading to more celebrity events in the future. His journey highlights the importance of versatility in sports, a quality celebrated by fans and aspiring athletes alike.
