UCSB Takes Lead in Big West Semifinal Game

HENDERSON, Nev. — The No. 5 seed UC Santa Barbara Gauchos surged ahead in the Big West semifinal matchup against the No. 1-seeded UC San Diego Tritons tonight at 6:43 p.m. after a three-point shot by graduate student guard Stephan Swenson, followed by a stepback jumper from junior guard Ben Shtolzberg. This combination enabled the Gauchos to lead 24-19 with just three minutes left in the first half.
Initially, the Tritons had the upper hand, leading 17-13 with under eight minutes remaining, showcasing a strong defensive strategy that limited UCSB’s shooting to below 30 percent. The early defense forced the Gauchos into difficult shot opportunities, as UCSD capitalized on their offensive plays.

As the match progressed, the Gauchos managed to rally, igniting an 11-0 run that shifted the momentum in their favor. Fans in attendance watched anxiously as the game approached the half, with the Tritons desperately searching for answers to regain their lead.
At tip-off, which took place at 5:45 p.m. local time, the excitement in the arena was palpable. This semifinal clash serves as a critical moment for both teams, with the winner advancing to the championship game and continuing their quest for a coveted title in the Big West Conference.
