A widespread Microsoft outage hit users across the globe Thursday morning, disrupting access to popular services like Microsoft 365, Teams, and Outlook. Reports on Downdetector spiked sharply as users flooded the platform to confirm they were not alone in experiencing login failures and service interruptions.
The issues began surfacing early Thursday, with thousands of complaints logged from various locations. Many users found themselves unable to log into their accounts or access core features. The outage affected not just Microsoft’s own services but also appeared to have ripple effects on other platforms. Downdetector also showed spikes for OpenAI, Xbox Live, Amazon Web Services, Cloudflare, Fortnite, and Dropbox around the same time, though the reports were limited to a few thousand complaints each.
Microsoft’s Service Health Status page, however, showed all services operational as of later in the morning. Teams outages had begun to subside, according to user reports. The cause of the outage remains unknown, and the company has not yet provided an estimated time for full resolution.
This is not the first time Microsoft has faced such disruptions. In January, a Microsoft 365 outage affected thousands for several hours before being resolved. Another hours-long outage in April hit Microsoft Outlook specifically. The recurrence raises questions about the resilience of cloud-dependent infrastructure.
Earlier this month, Microsoft filed a WARN notice revealing 605 permanent layoffs at its Redmond location, effective September 4. Those cuts are part of a larger Xbox restructuring that will eliminate roughly 3,200 roles globally by fiscal year 2027. The timing of the outage so soon after those layoffs has sparked conversation about resource allocation and system reliability.
