Mizzou’s Offensive Line Faces Critical Test Against South Carolina

Columbia, MO – The University of Missouri’s football team is gearing up for a significant challenge as they prepare to face South Carolina in the Southeastern Conference (SEC) opener on Saturday. After starting the season 3-0, including an impressive performance against Louisiana, the focus now shifts to the Tigers’ offensive line, which has shown improvement in run blocking but continues to struggle with pass protection.
Head coach Eli Drinkwitz has expressed concern over the offensive line’s ability to protect quarterback Beau Pribula, particularly after allowing two sacks in last week’s game against the Ragin’ Cajuns. “I don’t love where we’re at protecting the quarterback,” Drinkwitz said in a postgame press conference. “We’re going to have to look at that and get that off the tape.”
Despite these issues, Missouri ranks among the top 20 in the FBS for both run and pass blocking. Pribula has handled pressure well, completing more than 84% of passes thrown under duress, marking a notable contrast to the previous season’s starter, Brady Cook.
The offensive line’s challenges are compounded by injuries and inconsistencies among the interior players. The unit still has room for growth as they adapt to playing as a cohesive group under new pressures.
As Mizzou prepares for South Carolina, which features All-SEC edge rusher Dylan Stewart, the offensive line’s performance will be critical. Drinkwitz has indicated that they plan to continue rotating players to improve both performance and competition within the line.
Ahmad Hardy, Missouri’s standout running back, has also played a vital role in alleviating some pressure on the line, racking up impressive rushing statistics early in the season. However, the real test will come against a formidable SEC defense.
Missouri’s offensive line will have to tighten up to face the Gamecocks, whose defensive line remains a significant challenge. The SEC opener will be pivotal not just for positioning in the conference but also for setting the tone for the team’s future matches this season.
As the Tigers head into this critical game, they hope that continued improvement from the offensive line will help them maintain their offensive efficiency while dealing with the challenges presented by a higher level of competition.
