OpenAI Unveils New Developer Tools for ChatGPT Apps

San Francisco, CA — OpenAI showcased new developer tools aimed at enhancing ChatGPT during its annual developer conference on Oct. 6, 2025. CEO Sam Altman revealed that these innovations will allow developers to embed third-party applications within the ChatGPT interface.
The newly introduced software development kit (SDK) enables interactive apps to operate directly in ChatGPT, allowing users to engage with these tools seamlessly. Altman explained, “This will enable a new generation of apps that are adaptive, interactive, and personalized.”
During demonstrations, developers showcased apps such as Canva and Zillow responding to user commands in real-time. For instance, a Canva app generated promotional materials for a dog-walking business while Zillow provided an interactive map displaying real estate listings in Pittsburgh. Users could refine their searches based on specific criteria, such as the number of bedrooms or yard space.
OpenAI plans to allow users to make purchases through these apps by introducing an ‘agentic commerce protocol’ within ChatGPT. Currently, apps from major companies like Booking.com, Canva, and Spotify are accessible to signed-in users outside the EU.
The SDK also provides options for developers to set up and test their applications within a developer mode. Sample apps and design tips will assist in this development process, with future support for a comprehensive app directory.
Beyond embedding apps, OpenAI is developing tools for autonomous agents capable of carrying out tasks on behalf of users. The Agent Builder, a visual tool for workflow assembly, is part of this offering. During the demo, OpenAI created a session recommendation agent for conference attendees in under eight minutes.
Developers can also expect customization features through Reinforcement Fine-Tuning (RFT) for future models. Altman stressed that the aim is not just to create a chatbot but a comprehensive super-assistant, prompting some skepticism about whether users would spend all their time in ChatGPT.
With these new announcements, OpenAI continues to compete with tech giants like Google and Amazon, especially as the landscape of AI evolves. “This is the best time in history to be a builder,” Altman remarked, highlighting the rapid advancements in technology.
