Desean Jackson Michael Vick College Football Showdown

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — DeSean Jackson and Michael Vick will make history on Thursday night as they meet on the sidelines for the first time as head coaches. The former Philadelphia Eagles stars will lead Delaware State and Norfolk State, respectively, in a college football game at Lincoln Financial Field.

The game is set to kick off at 7 p.m. and marks a significant occasion as it will be the first contest held at Lincoln Financial Field featuring two historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs). The matchup was initially planned for Dover, Delaware, but Jackson advocated for a bigger venue, ultimately securing the Eagles’ home ground.

“To come back to where we practiced, fought, and played together, this night will be memorable for years,” Vick said in August. “I am proud to be here with my brother.”

The game will be broadcast nationally on ESPNU, with tickets starting at $35, making it accessible to a wide audience. Delaware State, currently boasting a record of 5-3 and 1-0 in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) play, is eager for a second consecutive victory, having broken their MEAC losing streak just last week.

Vick’s Norfolk State team is struggling, holding a record of 1-7 and looking to turn their season around after a difficult defeat against South Carolina State. “It’s going to take four quarters of football,” Vick acknowledged, noting the challenges his team has faced this season.

Both coaches reflect the recent trend of former NFL players transitioning to coaching roles at HBCUs, following in the footsteps of figures like Deion Sanders. Jackson quoted Sanders’ influence, saying, “Without Deion’s success, our success would not have been presented to us.”

Both teams have talented players, including Delaware State’s quarterback, Kaiden Bennett, who has tallied 945 yards and six touchdowns. Norfolk State’s Otto Kuhns has shown promise as well, accumulating 1,585 yards and 11 touchdowns this season.

As the anticipation builds, the gathering will not only reflect sportsmanship but also a celebration of community and cultural heritage, with performances and festivities planned for halftime and throughout the event. This matchup is more than just a game; it’s an opportunity for both teams to showcase their skills and commitment on a national stage.
