Jets Receiver John Metchie III Opens Up About His Journey
NEW YORK, NY — John Metchie III is making headlines as the newest wide receiver for the New York Jets after trading from the Philadelphia Eagles late last month. In a candid Q&A with Post columnist Steve Serby, Metchie discussed his incredible journey overcoming adversity, including serious health challenges.
Metchie described winning the 2024 George Halas Award for resilience in facing personal struggles. He likened his experience to the famous saying: ‘Get knocked down seven times, get up eight.’ He emphasized the importance of resilience in sports and life, stating, ‘It’s all about getting back up after whatever said adversity is.’
Reflecting on his journey, he recalled his heart scare in high school, where he suffered from a heart murmur. ‘I think it’s just through it all keeping a strong faith,’ he said. Metchie shared that the fear of possibly not being able to continue playing sports was daunting.
His battle with leukemia was even more challenging. ‘Your loved ones are definitely the biggest thing. When that happened, it’s just falling back on who you are as a person,’ he explained.
Metchie’s year away from football after missing the 2022 season was another tough moment. He focused on showing up every day, learning to be present. ‘Every day you wake up, no single day is promised,’ he emphasized.
When asked about stepping back on the field, he described the experience as akin to learning a new language. ‘There’s just so much detail that goes into what we do,’ he said.
Metchie also discussed the physical and mental resilience required to overcome injuries and challenges. His outlook on the game centers around winning, with an unwavering focus on improving each play. ‘The only thing on my mind is winning the game,’ he stated.
He also expressed his pride in his diverse heritage and upbringing, which includes being born in Taiwan, raised in Ghana, and growing up in Canada. This rich background shaped his identity and drive.
As for his role in the NFL, Metchie portrays himself as a player who thrives on versatility. ‘I enjoy playing football… catching, blocking, everything,’ he said. His competitive spirit and passion are evident as he aspires to be the best version of himself.
Looking ahead, Metchie is excited about his first Thanksgiving in the NFL, even though he already celebrated Canadian Thanksgiving. He plans to embrace the occasion with gratitude for family and friends.
In closing, Metchie gave a simple yet powerful message about his professional journey: ‘I’m more of a by-example type of person’ – letting his actions resonate more than his words.
