Antoine Griezmann Retires from International Football
Antoine Griezmann, a key figure in French football and renowned for his performances on the world stage, has announced his retirement from international soccer. The announcement, made on September 30, 2024, has garnered attention widely given Griezmann’s substantial impact on the sport over the past decade. His decision was shared through social media, where he expressed gratitude for his journey with Les Bleus.
The 33-year-old has been an integral part of the French national team since his debut in 2014. Griezmann has achieved significant milestones, including scoring 44 goals in 137 appearances, which places him fourth on France’s list of all-time scorers. His career highlights include winning the FIFA World Cup in 2018 and the UEFA Nations League in 2021.
“It’s with a heart full of memories that I close this chapter of my life,” Griezmann stated in his Instagram message. “Thank you for this wonderful tricolor adventure and see you soon.” The forward has been a pivotal player, contributing both in terms of goals and assists, and served under the continued direction of coach Didier Deschamps.
Griezmann’s journey with the French team began in 2014, during a friendly against the Netherlands. His tenure is studded with accolades, such as being the player of the tournament during the 2016 European Championship, where France finished as runners-up. Among his peers, only Hugo Lloris and Lilian Thuram boast more international appearances, underscoring Griezmann’s consistency and dedication to the national side.
Despite his illustrious international career, recent times saw Griezmann grapple with diminished influence in the squad, particularly after the European Championship earlier this year. His final appearance for France was marked by a brief role as a substitute in a Nations League match against Belgium.
In reflecting on Griezmann’s contribution, Coach Didier Deschamps praised his selflessness and collective spirit, noting that Griezmann was always willing to make sacrifices for the team’s success. “Even if his club career is not over, Antoine was and will remain a monument to French football, one of the greatest players in its history,” Deschamps remarked through a statement from the French soccer federation.
Griezmann’s club career, notably with Atletico Madrid where he remains the all-time top scorer, is set to continue at least until his contract expires in 2026. His club’s commitment remains strong as Griezmann looks forward to further achievements on the field.
Upon his international retirement, Griezmann thanked Deschamps for his support over the years, despite earlier tensions regarding leadership roles within the team. “It has often been said that Antoine was my darling,” Deschamps said, emphasizing a strong and enduring bond despite recent challenges.
