Jiri Patera Joining Boston Bruins

The Boston Bruins have announced the acquisition of goaltender Jiri Patera from the Vancouver Canucks, after claiming him off waivers on October 2. This move adds an unexpected twist to the Canucks’ goalie lineup, as Patera previously figured in their plans, albeit in a role that had diminished with recent signings.

Patera, 25, showcased his skills during the 2023-24 season with the Henderson Silver Knights in the American Hockey League (AHL). In 25 games with the team, he garnered a record of 11-10-4, with a goals against average (GAA) of 2.99 and a save percentage of .903. Over his AHL career, spanning 85 games, Patera has recorded an overall record of 37-40-6, a 2.92 GAA, and a .907 save percentage. The Prague, Czechia native was a sixth-round pick (161st overall) in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft by the Vegas Golden Knights, where he also played eight NHL games.

This move comes as a surprise to the Vancouver Canucks, who had signed Patera to serve as their third goaltender. However, that plan shifted with the addition of Kevin Lankinen, pushing Patera down the depth chart initially and eventually leading to his placement on waivers.

The Canucks had intended for Patera to join their AHL affiliate in Abbotsford and possibly share goaltending duties with prospect Nikita Tolopilo. Patera’s departure leaves Tolopilo and AHL-contracted Jonathan Lemieux as the main options for the Abbotsford Canucks. Meanwhile, Ty Young, another prospect within their system, might stay or get reassigned to the ECHL, given the altered dynamics in the team’s lineup.

Boston Bruins General Manager Don Sweeney expressed confidence in Patera’s abilities, viewing the acquisition as a strategic move to bolster depth in the team’s goaltending roster. It remains to be seen how Patera’s addition will affect the Bruins’ existing lineup, especially if goaltending developments, such as potential re-signing of Jeremy Swayman, play into the team’s future strategies.
