Celtics Boost Frontcourt Depth with Acquisition of Xavier Tillman from Grizzlies

The Boston Celtics have made a move to strengthen their frontcourt rotation as they prepare for the upcoming playoffs. The team has acquired Xavier Tillman from the Memphis Grizzlies in exchange for a pair of second-round picks and forward Lamar Stevens, according to sources.

In the deal, the Celtics will receive Tillman, a rugged big man who has been having a solid season for the injury-ravaged Grizzlies. Tillman has been averaging 6.0 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 1.7 assists per game. With Boston already boasting the league’s top rebounding record, Tillman’s addition will only further bolster their strength in that area. Although his shooting has been a bit inconsistent, Tillman has been thrust into a larger role this season and has proven himself as a valuable contributor.

Last season, Tillman played a key part in the Grizzlies’ successful campaign, averaging career highs in scoring and rebounding with 7.0 points and 5.0 rebounds per game. He also showcased his ability to perform under pressure in the playoffs, where he posted even better numbers with 8.7 points, 8.0 rebounds, and 3.2 assists per game.

On the other side of the trade, the Grizzlies will acquire a pair of second-round picks and Lamar Stevens. Stevens, who has played sparingly for the Celtics this season, has averaged 2.8 points and 1.6 rebounds in limited minutes. Before joining Boston, he spent three seasons with the Cleveland Cavaliers where he was a regular part of their rotation.

This trade signifies Boston’s intent to strengthen their frontcourt depth as they aim to solidify their position as the top seed in the Eastern Conference. With potential match-ups against strong teams like the Milwaukee Bucks and Philadelphia 76ers looming in the playoffs, the Celtics are making moves to ensure they have the necessary tools to compete.

The acquisition of Tillman not only adds to their rebounding prowess, but also provides a solid defensive presence in the paint. Tillman’s ability to generate steals and blocks will complement the existing strengths of Boston’s defensive lineup, including players like Robert Williams III, Al Horford, and Enes Kanter.

This move by the Celtics is reminiscent of their previous trade last season when they acquired Daniel Theis from the Chicago Bulls. It exemplifies the team’s strategy of bolstering their frontcourt depth through targeted acquisitions.

For Memphis, this trade serves as an opportunity to accumulate future assets as they look ahead to the next season. The Grizzlies recently traded Jonas Valančiūnas to the New Orleans Pelicans, and this move further adds to their pool of future draft picks.
